Every year in January, there is a very special event: the traditional regatta “João das Botas”. The saveiros, old cargo sail boats typical for Bahia, are built completely out of wood and still travel without any motor. They still transport wood, construction material and beverages – almost everything you can tie down on a deck. They take these goods to all corners of All Saints Bay, to many small islands and even up the various rivers of the region. The regattas with their prizes in cash for the winners are an attempt to keep the tradition of the cargo sail boats alive.
